A beautiful wild Pangolin (scaly anteater) climbing, wrapping ts long tail and digging in its large claws. Manidae means “spirits” and is the only extant family of pangolins, themselves the only mammals to have scales made of keratin. Pangolins are nocturnal ant eaters and usually live in hollow trees or burrows. Found in Asia and sub Saharan Africa they are threatened by heavy trafficking, poaching and deforestation. We might be seeing the last of these beautiful, unique mammals.
