In the 1890’s, St. Mary’s Church in the centre of Swansea was to be rebuilt and amongst applicants for the job of architect behind this mammoth project were a local architect and Sir Arthur Blomfield.

Sir Arthur won the commission, and feeling sore and slighted at an outsider working on the church, the local architect bided his time, buying a row of buildings directly opposite the church, tore them down and rebuilt offices for a brewery, whereupon he perched a carving of this Devil, glowering into the church built by his rival.

Upon the opening of his brewery offices, he declared “When your church is destroyed and burnt to the ground my devil will remain laughing”. There the Devil sat for years until February 1941 when Swansea was blitzed over three nights. The Devil’s station went unscathed, but St Mary’s was battered and the flames from the building most likely illuminated the smirking adversary sat opposite! His story doesn’t end there! He was removed when his home was demolished in the 1960’s to make room for The Quadrant Shopping Center, and he disappeared, somehow making his way into a garage in England. Meanwhile, a Welsh Newspaper started the search for him, and the owners of the garage reconnected him with his homeland. He was placed as close as possible to his original location, in the Quadrant, but not as to offend local church goers, (the church being rebuilt). His presence did upset them though, and he was placed in storage, until public outcry saw his return, (and his placement facing the church). He can now be visited in Swansea Museum, where he can be properly cared for!

I do love a bit of spite craft! Here is my rendition of The Swansea Devil as seen from a flaming church window, with the Welsh translation of his name, but he is also known as Old Nick of course!
