Laura, aka Bumble&Earwig creates miniature faux-taxidermy sculpture using the process of needle-felting.Â
Laura currently works in a museum with objects from the Natural History and Anthropology collections, and finds these diverse objects a huge source of inspiration. Â
Â
Antique taxidermy in particular has been a driving force in her practice. She is fascinated by the portrayal of animal personalities in both trophy pieces and more scientific representations. Within the Anthropology collections she works with, she is particularly interested in the use of animal imagery in artworks spanning all cultures and time periods.
Â
Laura initially specialised in faux-taxidermy wearable art pieces, such as trophy head brooches, but now also makes larger display domes and dioramas.
Â
Through playing with the scale and context of these ‘specimens’, she aims to subvert the negative connotations often associated with taxidermy, namely hunting, death and disgust. A tiny snarling fox worn on a lapel could instead be seen as cute, futile or ridiculous.Â
Â
All pieces are made individually by hand, with each one taking many hours to complete. She has a strong maker’s ethos, and a belief in craftsmanship and the role of the artist’s own hand.Â
